SWEETWATER FOUNDATION
Turning Waste Into a Community Resource
The Sweet Water Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation, trains children, adults, families and organizations to:
Grow nutritious food utilizing waste food and other repurposed materials
Generate compost and build soil quality
Employ vermiculture (worm composting) to enhance compost viability
Create a symbiotic aquaponic/vermiculture-based systems to raise fish (a source of complete protein) and vegetables—aquaponics combines aquaculture (raising aquatic species in a controlled environment) with hydroponics (raising plants without soil*) *Sweet Water utilizes a hybrid system that includes vermicomposted soil
Develop and service sources of waste food and other compost components
Preserve fresh food for use throughout the year
Activate the general community to support the above listed activities
The Sweet Water Foundation strives to engage people in growing their own food and supplying healthy food to their neighborhoods in urban “food deserts” and in nutritionally challenged areas across the globe. We work closely with Sweet Water Organics, our “for profit”, partner to develop aquaponic systems plus the related science and technology necessary to create profitable and sustainable systems in any environment. The focus is on:
Proven approaches
Environmental and cultural appropriateness
Sustainability and profitability
Job creation
Follow-up support and network building
The Sweet Water Foundation and Sweet Water Organics Sweet Water website are located in an old industrial building in Bayview, WI, USA. It is a “proof of concept” facility based upon the Growing Power model plus the work of countless others who have developed the fields of aqua- and vermi-culture.
We receive and are grateful for the vast expertise of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee-based Great Lakes Water Institute, an invaluable partner.
